April 25: Independent Bookstore Day

Lili Chin

Amazon is a killer of small businesses. Thanks to Amazon, more than 50% of independent physical bookstores have gone under in the past decade. As if that wasn't bad enough, Amazon also supports ICE surveillance.

Over a year ago, I stopped buying books on Amazon and stopped using Kindle. (I use the Bookshop e-reader app) I also stopped asking people to buy my books on Amazon. Yes, I know I will have a lower sales ranking and less reviews. I am okay with this. I hope you will all tell your friends about my books on your social media!

For this year's Independent Bookstore Day, please consider breaking your Amazon habit and buying books from your local bookstores. If you are unable to travel to a physical bookstore, did you know that you can still support them with your online orders?

Visit bookshop.org and click on Choose A Bookstore. You will see a list of stores within your area -- select the store you wish to buy from. Your purchase will go towards keeping that store open.

As an author, thank you for buying my books from indie bookstores!

If you would prefer signed copies of Doggie Language, Kitty Language, and Dogs of the World, you can purchase these here on my website.

P.S. ABC Dogs and Ten Happy Dogs are new and will be published on Sept 22, 2026.
