Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy this?

You can buy this Dogs on a Map illustration as a poster or an art print from my shop. The listing photos show a closer-up view.

There is also a collection of dog breed prints in my shop.

Do you have a [breed name] on this map?

The 2018 edition of this poster has 366 dogs on it.

Tip: look for the country that the breed is from.

You can also search for products in my shop by typing in a breed name with the Search feature.

Why didn't you include the [breed name] ?

With over 400 dog breeds in the world - most of which are unregistered with the AKC and FCI, space limitations prohibit inclusion of every single one.

What is the story behind this map?

After publishing the Dogs of the World print series (2014) I received many requests to combine all the dogs onto a single poster, while adding breeds not yet drawn. As there are already many official dog breed charts (like those you see at your vet's office) with serious poses and fancy show hairstyles, I wanted to create designs that are less formal and more cheerful.

My goal was to include non-pedigree dogs, rare breeds, mixed breeds, and landraces, while sticking with the original theme of geographical origins.

The very first edition of this map looked quite different, had less dogs and was licensed by a jigsaw puzzle company. (The puzzle is out of print and discontinued)

This is the latest version with 366 dogs.

How can I see or download a higher-resolution image?

I have deliberately kept this image at the size and resolution that it is to prevent theft and copyright infringement. Get a better look at the dogs in the poster listing, or in my new book!

Why does your map look so weird?

This map was intentionally stylized to be dog breed centric. It isn't drawn to scale and neither are the dogs.

Why do some countries appear bigger or smaller than they are?

I expanded places like France, Germany, and the UK because these countries developed the largest number of registered and recognized dog breeds. By comparison, some places are drawn smaller due to the smaller number of standardized breeds there.

Did you know that breeds only make up around 15% of the dogs of the world? Most dogs aren't breeds and don't appear on this map.

Why are some of these dogs in different countries than the ones you assigned them to previously? Why have some designs changed?

For this version, I enjoyed the benefit of expert advice from a dog breed historian.  I also tweaked some designs after having seen some of these dog breeds in real life and having acquired better reference material. When you know better, you do better. I am excited for you to see my Dogs of the World book in 2025!

You placed the [breed name] in the wrong part of the country.

Space limitations made it impossible to “dial in” all breeds’ exact locations!

I have a problem with the way you drew the [breed name]. It's not correct / This is not how it should look.

As an independent artist, I’m not employed by any breed/kennel clubs or dog groups.  These images are intentionally stylized and not meant to serve as realistic or ideal representations of the breeds depicted.

I want to buy this print with MY dogs on it. Can you swap out some of these dogs for ones that look like my dog(s)? Can you make some color changes?

Sorry, I don't have the time to create custom versions of this map. I do however take orders for pet portraits!

Can we use some of these individual dog designs for our project/website/business logo/article/book?

My dog designs were not created to function as free clip art or stock images for other projects.

If you’re looking for dog breed images, I suggest visiting websites that license dog breed images to the public.

If you are interested in collaborating on a Dogs of the World product line, please get in touch!

We are a breed club or rescue. Can we use your design of our breed to turn into fundraising merchandise?

I don't send/sell digital files of these designs, but please email me and I may be able to have items produced for you to purchase at wholesale prices.

I can also donate art to your non-profit fundraiser, or hire me to create a unique breed design for you.

We would like to partner with you to create co-branded products/ We would like to display this map alongside our written article on a dog breed-related subject.

Please email me directly regarding any licensing or publicity questions connected to Dogs of the World and I will answer your questions!
