FAQ & Special Requests

Q: Do you draw cats, birds, fish, pigs and other animals?

A: YES! I will draw any pet animal at the same prices.

Q: Will you draw my dogs with people and/or a background location?

A: I don’t usually draw people or background locations. My pet portraits are done in the simple style that you can see on this website. The dogs are usually standing, seated or lying down on a simple colored background with the occasional addition of toys or other objects.

If you wish to commission a drawing with people portraits and background artwork, this will be priced higher and separately from my usual portrait artwork and may be in a different style from what you see here. Please contact me to discuss.

Q: Will you draw my dog as a company logo? Can I take the digital drawing that I commissioned and use this as a company logo?

A: Any sort of design or illustration you plan to use for commercial purposes - business logos, web banners, blog headers, promotional art, or anything that isn’t a simple portrait of your dog in my usual style, will be priced separately at a higher rate. In this case, the image will be copyrighted exclusively to you, giving you the rights to use it anywhere you like. Please contact me with your requirements and I will send you a quote and legal agreement. Examples: DOGGIE LOGOS

Q: You have drawn my dogs - I would like to add some items/decorations to the drawing to make it holiday-themed. Will you do this?

A: If I am reusing the drawings that I have already done without creating new portrait poses, I can add extra elements and will charge a small fee depending on how simple or complex the modifications are.

Example: CHUBBY & MYNNE

Q: Is it OK if I create products with your drawings using a site like Cafepress or Zazzle?

A: I am happy for you to reprint my drawing only if the items are for your personal use and/or shared amongst friends and family and not sold for profit. If you are using a site like Cafepress or Zazzle, please make your order private, without listing the item publicly for sale.

Example: ROCKY

If you are hiring me at a higher rate to illustrate something for you business (which includes transfer of copyright), you may do anything you like with the drawing.

Example: Copyright MARIE-SABOTINE

Q: We are a non-profit group and we don’t have a big budget…

A: If you are a rescue organization, I am happy to create unique fundraiser artwork at discounted rates. Please contact me for a quote and I will do my best to work within your budget. The artwork will be copyrighted to the rescue organization and you will have full rights to use this artwork for fundraising. A credit to Lili Chin, www.doggiedrawings.net would be very much appreciated!  I have created many graphics for Boston Terrier rescue groups. I also donate existing artwork or Dog Portrait gift certificates to fundraiser events.

Example: Copyright NEBRASKA BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE

Q: Is it OK if I get a tattoo of your drawing?

A: YES! :)

Example: Melissa’s DUKE & DAISY tattoo

Q: Can I have a drawing of my dog with a transparent background so that I can edit it in Photoshop and add my own background, text, decorations etc.? Do I have your permission to modify your drawing?

A: If you hire me for commercial illustration services (and pay a higher rate), you will receive a layered PSD file, and full rights to edit and repurpose. Please let me know in advance what your plans are.

Q: Can you send me the digital file at a different size so that I can have it printed on a greeting card or poster etc.? (eg,  I need the file at ___dpi, __ inches etc.)

A: If you wish to print the drawing of your dog on greeting cards and posters, you may do so as so long as these items are for personal use (for friends and family) and not made available for sale. If you need the print-resolution drawing to be a specific size (that isn’t 8.5” x 11”) please let me know in advance what this size is, before I start drawing.

Update: I also offer doggie portraits at larger print sizes

Example: Custom christmas card

If you are ordering a portrait for commercial purposes or to illustrate something for you business, my higher fee includes transfer of copyright. You may request any file size/format and do anything you like with the drawing.

Q: I am the author of a book and I would like you to illustrate my book. (Or - I would like to use your drawings in my film/video etc.) How much do you charge and will I have full rights to the illustrations?

A: I would be happy to discuss these illustrations with you and send you a quote (per page) which will depend on an estimate of how much work or time is involved, and the amount of research and detail required in the drawings. My prices start at roughly $150-$200 per page.

Example: From “Behavior Adjustment Training” by Grisha Stewart

You will have full rights to these illustrations at a fee which includes transfer of copyright,  OR you may license the illustrations from me at a lower fee for a set period of time, in which case we would agree on a licensing arrangement that takes book sales and royalty payments into account.

Q: I love your drawings of Boogie. He looks so much like my boston terrier. How much would it cost for me to use your Boogie artwork on my stuff (business cards, posters, book, shirts etc.) ? Can I change his blue eye to brown? Can I use only one small part of your Boogie poster? Will this cost less?

A: I would prefer you to hire me to draw YOUR dog for you. This new artwork will then be uniquely and exclusively yours. But if you really must use my drawings of Boogie, I may license these to you depending on what you plan to do with the drawings and how you will be using them. I would not want the drawings modified in any way and I would not want bits and pieces taken and used out of context if they are a part of a poster.

Q: I love your DOGGIE LANGUAGE POSTER. Will you re-create these drawings for me using MY dog (or a different dog breed)?

A: YES. However, I know Boogie and boston terriers very well and other breeds not so much. For me to re-create a poster like DOGGIE LANGUAGE that shows many poses, I will need you to send me lots of reference photos of your dog as I am less familiar with the unique expressions and body language of other dog breeds. Please share with me a few photos of your dog (or preferred breed), let me know how many and specifically which poses you want me to draw. What size do you want the drawing to be? Do you require a digital file? I will send you a quote. (Honestly… I am not interested in re-doing this poster)

Q: I am a dog trainer/work at a shelter/run a rescue etc. Do I have permission to print your dog training/behavior drawings and hand these out to people? Are you really offering these for free?

A: YES! I offer some drawings as free downloads under a Creative Commons license. Anyone is welcome to share, print and distribute (non-commercially) unmodified versions of these drawings with credit given to Lili Chin, www.doggiedrawings.net. I take donations to my Paypal account - and will accept any amount! I also offer some of these drawings in larger poster formats which you can purchase at my ZAZZLE STORE.

Q: Can I repost any of your drawings on my website/blog/facebook?

A: YES, on the condition that you credit Lili Chin, link to www.doggiedrawings.net, and don’t modify the drawings.

Thank you!

If you have any questions, please contact me.

- Lili
